Transforming cancer care in Africa

Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy is a type of radiation therapy that involves placing radioactive sources inside or near the tumor. Brachytherapy delivers high doses of radiation to the cancer cells while minimizing the exposure to the surrounding healthy tissues and organs.

Brachytherapy can be used to treat various types of cancer, but it is especially effective for gynaecological cancers, such as cervical, endometrial, ovarian, and vaginal cancers.

Why Choose NLCC for Brachytherapy?
NLCC is the only cancer centre in Nigeria that has a functional 3D high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy machine. This is a sophisticated system that allows precise delivery of radiation to the tumor site using computerized planning and imaging guidance. The 3D HDR brachytherapy machine can treat gynaecological cancers with high accuracy and efficiency, reducing the treatment time and improving the outcomes.

NLCC has a dedicated brachytherapy team that consists of radiation oncologists, gynaecologists, medical physicists, therapy radiographers, and oncology nurses. They work together to provide safe and quality care for each patient, using the latest evidence-based protocols and international standards.

NLCC understands that brachytherapy can cause some side effects, such as vaginal dryness, bleeding, discharge, infection, or pain. That’s why NLCC runs a radiation side effects clinic to evaluate and mitigate side effects from radiation. The clinic offers supportive services such as nutritional counseling, pain management, and psychological counseling. The clinic also monitors the long-term outcomes of brachytherapy patients and provides follow-up care as needed.
How to Get Started with Brachytherapy at NLCC?
If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with gynecological cancer and needs brachytherapy, you can contact us to schedule an appointment with one of our radiation oncologists. You will need a referral from your primary care physician or gynecologists. You will also need to bring your medical records, such as histology reports, imaging scans, blood tests, etc.

At your first appointment, your radiation oncologist will review your medical history and perform a physical exam. They will also explain what brachytherapy is and how it works. They will discuss the benefits and risks of brachytherapy for your specific type of cancer. They will also answer any questions you may have about the treatment plan.

Your brachytherapy sessions will take place at our state-of-the-art facility within the premises of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Lagos. Depending on your treatment plan, you may have one or more sessions of brachytherapy, usually spanning 1 to 3 weeks.

Your radiation oncologist will monitor your progress throughout your treatment course. They will check your response to the treatment and adjust the plan if needed. They will also assess your side effects and provide you with medications or other interventions to manage them. They will also coordinate your care with other members of your multidisciplinary team.
